Adjustable Hospital Beds

There are many types of hospital beds for home use. Adjustable hospital beds typically allow you to adjust the bed to various different levels for ultimate comfort. They provide adjustments at the head, knee and leg area that allow you to be completely comfortable and take pressure off of certain areas of the body which can help to speed up recovery time. There are different types of adjustable beds available and it is important that you understand the different types in order to choose the appropriate bed for your needs.

Manual and Electric Adjustable Models

Adjustable hospital beds may be either manually or electrically powered or both. Manual beds require that you use a manual crank to lower and raise the bed’s height as well as the varying body adjustments. Semi-electric models are available that will enable you to push a button and raise your head, knees or legs electrically. You still however, have to lower and raise the height of the bed using a manual crank. Electric adjustable hospital beds are the most preferred but unfortunately are also the most expensive choice. They allow you to adjust the different levels of the bed using push button controls that are typically located on one of the side rails or at the foot of the bed. If you or someone in the home cannot physically adjust the bed manually then an electric model will be needed.

Adjustment for Comfort

Adjustable hospital beds are designed to provide complete comfort for the patient. They allow you to raise and/or lower three different sections of the bed. This allows you to take pressure off of certain areas and ensures that you can get completely comfortable when in the bed. The overall design of adjustable hospital beds provides much needed relief that is caused by pressure on certain areas of the body when in a traditional bed. The comfort provided by these beds allows for a much speedier and easier recovery from a number of illnesses and injuries. You can elevate or lower your head, knee area or legs or simply lie flat if you prefer.

Cost of Adjustable Beds

The cost of adjustable hospital beds will depend highly on the specific type of bed that you choose. Manual beds are the least expensive option with fully electric beds being the most expensive. You will find that the cost for hospital beds ranges widely and can be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars depending on the type of bed, various features that may be included and the specific manufacturer that you choose. If you have insurance coverage or Medicare Part B you may be able to get the bed paid for if your doctor orders it for you. Check with your insurance company about the possibility of paying for the bed. If you do not have insurance coverage or your policy does not include medical equipment coverage then you can still enjoy an adjustable hospital bed by purchasing a used model or renting. There are many different manufacturers and home health medical supply stores that offer adjustable hospital beds for purchase and rent.
